J. Michael Holloway

Mike Holloway was born in South Carolina, but a trip to Alaska in 1961 redirected his life. He ended up in the remote northeast corner of the state, in Gwich'in Country, at the home of elders Johnny and Sarah Frank. After completing medical studies in the South, he returned to Alaska, spending his professional career as an orthopedic surgeon for the Alaska Native Medical Center. As described by Native American Rights Fund Executive Director John Ecohawk, "Mike Holloway's book based on his experiences with an elderly Gwich'in couple illuminates the Gwich'in way of life." Mike lives with his wife Margie Gibson on a mountain slope near Indian, Alaska.
