Robin Roy

I am an Emeritus Professor of Design and Environment at the (UK) Open University and,

although semi-retired, I am still active in OU teaching and academic writing.

Since joining the OU in 1971 as one of the first lecturers in Design, I chaired and contributed to many OU courses on design, innovation, energy and environment, most recently Design Essentials; Innovation: Designing for change; and Environment: Journeys through a changing world.

From 1979 to 2012 I headed the Design Innovation Group to research design and innovation management and sustainable design. I have published many books, book chapters, papers and articles on topics ranging from design creativity and the successful management of new product development to environmentally sustainable education systems and consumer adoption of low and zero carbon technologies.

I am currently (2020) writing a new book on creativity, design and innovation based on the personal accounts of creatives and innovators.

I am a Fellow and a former International Advisory Commitee member of the Design Research Society, and a Director of Milton Keynes Community Energy, an a non-profit business dedicated to installing renewable energy systems for community benefit.

My academic interests include: design for the environment; sustainable innovation; sustainable buildings; creativity, design and innovation.
