Jules Nyquist

Jules is a life-long poet and loves to experiment with sound and form. Homesick, then is a winner of the 2018 NM/AZ Book Awards in Poetry. Zozobra poems is a finalist in the 2019 NM/AZ Book awards under philosophy. Her previous poetry collections, Behind the Volcanoes and Appetites have also been finalists for the NM/AZ book awards. Jules is the founder of Jules' Poetry Playhouse, LLC based in Placitas, NM. She earned her MFA in Writing & Literature (Poetry) from Bennington College in Vermont. She took a B.A. in Creative Writing from from Metropolitan State University, St. Paul, MN. She believes that curiosity about the world and observing everyday life are key to good poems.

She founded Jules' Poetry Playhouse in Albuquerque, NM in 2012, as a place for poetry and play, where she hosts visiting poets and conducts workshops and classes on poetry, creative writing and the creative process. Jules also has individual writing coach sessions by phone and in person.

Jules believes in a spirit of collaboration with other organizations and poets to bring poetry into new spaces and expose poetry to new audiences. Jules is an active member of the New Mexico State Poetry Society and is Membership chair as of 2017.

Jules’ poems have been widely published, appearing in publications such as: 5 AM, Salamander, Malpais Review, Adobe Walls, St. Paul Almanac, Long Islander News, Gray Sparrow, House Organ, Duke City Fix, Café Review and others. She is co-editor of the Poets Speak anthology series with John Roche and edited the volume 2 Hers series in 2017.
