Michael Newth

Michael Newth was born at Felton, in Somerset, England, in 1950. When his father's job 'sent him to Coventry', he became a foundation Choral Scholar of Coventry Cathedral and King Henry VIII Grammar School, before emigrating to Australia in 1965. Graduating from Macquarie University in 1973, he worked for thirty-seven years as a high school teacher of modern languages in Sydney, before retiring in 2010.

He has published many verse translations of Old French epic poetry, in individual and themed collection, and some of his work has been anthologized by The Folio Society. In 2011 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters (honoris causa)by his alma mater, in recognition of his contribution to the study of languages and literature.

Michael Newth's other abiding passions are music and gardening, which he often indulges in simultaneously.
