Michael Holland is a London based freelance nature educator & writer. As a child, he was inspired by Keith Mossman's 'The Pip Book' which started his hobby of growing plants and appreciating the natural world. He spent much of his childhood exploring woods and landscapes of Great Britain before studying Ecology at University.
He then found his way into environmental education at Kew Gardens and Chelsea Physic Garden where he stayed (eventually as Head of Education) for 25 years.
He became self-employed in 2020 around the time that his debut book 'I Ate Sunshine For Breakfast' was published. So far, it's been translated into over 20 languages and in November 2020 it won the Garden Media Guild's award for ‘Best Gardening Book'. In September 2021, it was shortlisted for the UK Royal Society's prestigious 'Young people's Book Prize'.
His second book is called ‘Smart Animals’ and zooms into the fascinatingly intelligent strategies of many well known creatures.
In book 3 he returned the plant kingdom with ‘A Jungle In Your Living Room’ - the back stories of many of our favourite houseplants and the tales of the possible who brought them from distant lands.
‘The Little Gardener’s Handbook’ is his 4th offering goes back to basics for budding botanists- suggesting the right tools, creating compost, exploring soil, accommodating pollinators, working with wildlife & more.
Michael is on the Education Committee of The Royal Horticultural Society & continues to write about nature as well as teaching people of all ages about our wonderful world in and about the great outdoors. He is a wildlife gardener and a DJ on his local radio station hSpark Radio.
