Theodore G. Manno

Theodore G. Manno (Ph.D., Auburn University) is author of SWAMP RAT-THE STORY OF DIXIE'S NUTRIA INVASION (Univ. Press of Mississippi, 2017), THE UTAH PRAIRIE DOG-LIFE AMONG THE RED ROCKS (Univ. of Utah Press, Fall 2014), and MATING BEHAVIOR OF COLUMBIAN GROUND SQUIRRELS (Proquest/UMI Dissertation Publishing, 2011). A featured author and panelist for the 2017 LOUISIANA BOOK FESTIVAL, Manno's research experience includes nutria along the Gulf Coast, prairie dogs in Utah, ground squirrels in Canada, and scarlet macaws in Costa Rica. His work has been covered by various media outlets including DISCOVERY NEWS, NEW SCIENTIST, USA TODAY (DAILY ADVERTISER), DESERET NEWS, SUN HERALD, ARIZONA DAILY STAR, CALGARY HERALD, KGUN9-TUCSON MORNING BLEND, AMERICAN PRESS, WRBH-CRESCENT CITY CHRONICLES, WIRE EAGLE, KMVT, and FCC FREE RADIO.

Manno's writing has appeared in dozens of periodicals (e.g., DESERT LEAF, EARTH ODYSSEY, FIDO FRIENDLY, LIGHTHOUSE DIGEST, MONTANA NATURALIST, NATURE ALBERTA, ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ALABAMA, TERRAIN, TUBAC VILLAGER, TUCSON GREEN TIMES), books (ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ANIMAL BEHAVIOR), and peer-reviewed scientific journals or meeting proceedings (e.g., AMERICAN NATURALIST, CANADIAN JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY, ETHOLOGY, JOURNAL OF MAMMALOGY), and his wildlife photography has been featured in those sources and on the cover of JOURNAL OF MAMMALOGY. He is also a frequent speaker at conferences and other events (e.g., LOUISIANA STATE MUSEUM, WESTERN NATIONAL PARKS ASSOCIATION, TUCSON FESTIVAL OF BOOKS, EMPIRE RANCH ROUNDUP, PIMA SPEAKERS SERIES, TUBAC PRESIDIO STATE HISTORIC PARK, UNIV. VERMONT, ARIZONA STATE UNIV., NORTHERN ARIZONA UNIV., UNLV, COLL. SO. NEVADA, GLENDALE COMM. COLL.). An award-winning teacher (Flinn Foundation Distinguished Educator 2019, AZ-NV Acad. of Sci. Outstanding Teacher 2011) and 5-time Advanced Placement test reader for ETS, Manno played jazz piano and tuba semi-professionally before pursuing science writing. A strain of bacteriophage (virus) has been named in his honor (Microbacterium Phage Manno).
