I was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma, in 1943 and lived all over the western half of the United States in my childhood. I joined the WAC in 1961, and met and married my husband in Washington DC in 1962. We were married at the Arlington National Cemetery Chapel.

We moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1964, and have lived here for more than 50 years.

More than 25 years ago I was diagnosed with insulin resistant hypoglycemia, and my husband is an insulin dependent diabetic. Little was known about hypoglycemia at that time, and "low carb" didn't exist! We discovered very early on that the standard “diabetic diet” didn’t work for either of us. For a while we followed the Atkins diet, and later we developed our own way of eating that works for us.

Now it isn’t a diet…it is a way of life. I have managed to convert almost all of our old familiar “comfort foods” to low carb. (Would you believe low carb southern pecan pie? Low carb pasta? Low carb yeast bread?) We are able to eat a varied and satisfying diet that keeps our blood sugar and weight both under control.
