Mary Byrne Eigel

Born and raised in Chicago, I now live in Washington, Missouri. Having raised two incredible daughters, my husband and I now share our space with two equally entertaining dogs. I have been an Author/Artist/Educator in the St. Louis area for many years, teaching at the elementary,high school, college and adult-education levels. I ventured into new territory with the publication of my first book, Silent Courage, in 2014.

"Wheelie: The Wheelchair in Search of Adventure" is the first in my chapter book series for children aged six to nine and their parents. Told from the wheelchair's point of view, we discover how this unique adventure loving wheelchair came to be. The series builds around physically challenged children who do not see themselves as diminished; they only see obstacles requiring creative problem solving. Wheelie appeals to all children, regardless of whether or not there is a wheelchair in their circle of friends or family.

Currently, when I am not writing or illustrating my own work, I offer writing workshops, assisting others in "mine-ing" their stories.

Having endured a chronic pain journey from hip dysplasia since childhood, I have an insider’s grasp of its complexities and challenges. Hip replacement surgery has allowed me to be in a better place for many years. But I understand the importance of being able to be mobile.
