Nancy Calef

Contemporary painter Nancy Calef is the author of "Peoplescapes -- My Story From Purging To Painting," a contributing artist to The Band of Women anthologies: "Nothing But the Truth So Help Me God" Vols. 1 & 2, "Battered Suitcase" magazine cover art, cover art for "Prisoners of Truth" by Jody Weiner and creator of "Peoplescapes," her multi-media paintings: oil, sculpture and found objects, humorously addressing social, political and spiritual issues facing society. Born in Bronx, New York, Calef received a scholarship at age 15 from the College of New Rochelle to study painting and sculpture. She moved to San Francisco in the Seventies, having since become bi-coastal, splitting her time with New York City, and she continues to paint and exhibit in solo and group exhibitions, included with American masters such as Milton Avery, Samuel Bak, Thomas Hart Benton, Isabel Bishop, Dorothy Winslade and Jack Levine. Calef was selected for artist residency during the State of the World Forums in SF and NYC.

Calef's experiences living in Europe and Thailand, traveling throughout the U.S., Mexico, Central America, Southeast Asia, India and Nepal, have cultivated her recognizable style, capturing the cultural and spiritual diversity of the world landscape with richness and depth. Her work is in private collections throughout the world. Calef is also a computer animator and a singer-songwriter. The artist's unusual painting technique is the subject of praise, including former President of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and one the greatest American artists of the twentieth century, Jack Levine:

"When I first saw Nancy's paintings, I thought `Now here's an original idea'. As a traditional, old workhorse I don't have much use for and don't believe in classifying contemporary art. I do think that a picture should say something, and Nancy Calef's subject matter and palette express a view of the world beyond her years." (2001)

"Now, this is art with an attitude." Former Mayor of SF Willie L. Brown
