Diane Gromala, PhD, is the Distinguished Professor at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada.
Her research in embodiment and the design of immersive technology is grounded in her long-lived experience of chronic pain and is an inter-relational mash-up of usually distinct knowledge bases of Design, Computer Science and philosophies of bodily experience. Dr. Gromala’s pioneering creative and scientific work challenges fundamental notions of text and typefaces driven by wearable biosensors; interactive books made of organic substances that decay and return to earth as compost; and immersive, neurophysiological technologies currently used to reduce pain. Such work was recognized by medical organizations (AMXRA, IASP, IHI); leading technical organizations (AWE XR, SIGGRAPH, CHI & TEI); numerous Design organizations and the U.S. Congress. Dr.Gromala’s award-winning design has been exhibited worldwide, is in the permanent collections of museums such as the MOMA, and was featured in numerous media outlets such as the Discovery Channel, the BBC, NHK and the New York Times, to name a few.
