People ask why I write "fan faction." Some, not all, think that writing that type of story is a cheat. That I’m lazy and not creative in my thinking so I use other authors' original ideas. The truth is they may be partially right, but it isn’t the entire tale. Staying steadfast to someone’s story idea is a really hard thing to do. To keep people familiar with the original works happy you need to truly know and honor that original work; you cannot turn heroes into villains or resurrect dead characters. With that said I guess I do take the easy way out, but only in a small sense. I take what was written by someone else and go off on a tangent that may hold very little resemblance to the original story line. Tom Swift was a childhood pleasure that introduced me to the sometimes madcap world of Science Fiction and Fantasy, and I would do no harm to my own, or others’, memories of the young inventor.

With that said I am trying to honor my first make-believe hero, but in a more today way of writing and not let myself be locked into the fifties and early sixties style. You don’t need to read the original stories to read my books since there is so little in common. The science of those days is mostly disproven now and a lot of character traits do not hold in today’s world. Names and lots of the places may be the same, but the time period is totally different and most of the action happens away from Earth.

I possibly could have written the stories easy enough with the use of new names and a change of location and stated that my books are all original and any resemblance to any other story is just a coincidence, but that would be a lie. It’s better all around for everyone that the true nature of my stories be known. I don’t want to lie to and cheat my readers.

I do have several original stories and I plan to write more in the future. For now I hope you do enjoy what I have written and continue to do so.
