I was born and raised in St. Joseph, MO. I lived in AZ. and CA. for about 18 years but returned to my home town in 1997.
I have never had just one passion. I want to know how to do it all. Recently, I have became interested in different styles of food preservation. Blame it on the economy or the fact I hate waste. (Probably both) I have been canning for decades but dehydrating is just a few years old for me. Both are very rewarding. It is just not enough to can or dehydrate the food...it has to be nutritious and taste good as well.
Cooking is enjoyable to me most of the time. I am always on the lookout for a new recipe. The first thing I do when I find a recipe is change it to suit me. I hate buying ingredients that I will only use for one thing so I try to keep the recipe ingredients to items on hand. I also try to stay away from ready made or box food....they are loaded with a lot of things that are just not good for us. My rule of thumb is ... if I can't pronounce it or don't know what it is... then I probably don't want to ingest it.
Thus, for the above reasons, Survival in the Kitchen came to be.
