Most people admire police and fire personnel even though their insight is due mostly to intuition or television. I have scrutinized them from the outside in and inside out. The more I see, the more I appreciate the incredible sacrifice they make. The strangest thing of all is; they do not see it as a sacrifice but an incredible pleasure. At ages forty and up, these people still love flashing lights and sirens!
I recently became aware that no one is more trained to write about them than I. I have taught them in the academy, prayed at their graduation, encouraged them to test for promotion, performed their weddings, celebrated the birth of their children, walked with them through divorce, sat beside them after their first shooting, ridden with them, watched them climb through the ranks, performed their funerals and even visited some of them in jail.
Like most authors, I prefer to have written than to write but the humor, the courage and the commitment of these men and women draw me back to the desk over and over again.
