Alice M. de Munnik

Alice de Munnik was born in the Netherlands and immigrated to Canada in the 1950s. She spent her formative years in Orillia. The next phase of her life took her to careers in Toronto and Vancouver, before retiring in Orillia in 2004.

Alice started writing as a teenager and has written close to 100 poems, a memoir entitled Assimilating which was published in 2012 and a collection of short stories entitled, Elephants I Have Known and Other Animals Stories published in 2013. She also has two e-books that have just been published by Kindle called Lessons from the Men I Have Known and Life and Other Nightmares. In addition, Alice's stories and poems have appeared in four different anthologies.

In August of 2005, Alice won the gold prize for short fiction at the Lake Country Literary Lapses Festival at the Leacock Museum in Orillia for her short story Dancing at Mel Levine's. In 2007, she won the gold for her poem A Long Journey Home at the same Festival.

Since 2005, Alice has been the editor of the annual anthology created by participants in the Orillia Library's ongoing Lifescapes Programme.

Alice is a member of the Mariposa Writers Group as well as the Lifescapes Alumni Writing Group. She currently teaches a 12-week fiction writing class at the Orillia Public Library.

Her interests include reading American, Canadian, English and translated fiction from other countries, social geography, world cultures and psychology.
