WHO AM I?

I am an HR professional and consultant with over 35 years of experience, prior to which I worked in clerical work measurement, work study, computer systems and processes design, warehouse and inventory management automation, sales, and customer service - all that after having started out with a Joint Hons BSc in Physics and Electronic Engineering! My wife once summed me up the best, “A techie turned shrink!”

WHAT DO I BELIEVE?

I believe passionately in HR and its ability to make a positive and measurable impact on the bottom line of organizations as well as on the life of every individual employee.

I believe equally passionately that most people want to do a good day’s work; that happy people usually do so; and, that even mediocre talent can produce outstanding achievements if inspired to do so.

I believe that most people can be taught the skills needed to be very effective managers and some can be shown how to use and develop their leadership capabilities; leadership and management are different and are often dysfunctional twins. They make the biggest contribution when supported by excellent business acumen.

I believe that technology offers immense potential to enhance processes, work and life in general. It can even assist in the process of (a) engineering behavior, and (b) enhancing the quality of data with which we make decisions. However, it is often utilized merely to automate (or trivialize) bad processes or to do things that were not needed at all. We have to get better at capitalizing on technology rather than being exploited or dictated to by it.

WHAT DO I DO?

I spend my time using my knowledge, skills and experience to help others to be effective managers and leaders, either by working with them directly, or by working with the HR departments who design the processes and tools that they use. I combine skills in process design, data management, and contemporary technology during the design phases, with an ability to communicate with, train and inspire people during implementation!
