Nathan Lopes Cardozo

Rabbi Nathan Lopes Cardozo is one of the most provocative and original voices in contemporary Jewish thought. Born in Amsterdam to a secular Sephardic family of Portuguese-Spanish descent, he discovered Judaism as a teenager and later studied at the famed Gateshead Yeshiva in England, as well as under leading rabbinic thinkers in Israel.

Rabbi Cardozo is the founder and dean of the Cardozo Academy in Jerusalem, an independent institute dedicated to rethinking Judaism and Jewish education in light of the spiritual and philosophical challenges of modernity. His essays and lectures explore diverse topics, including Halacha, faith, religious creativity, moral courage, Zionism, philosophy, existentialism, and the future of Judaism.

Blending classical Torah scholarship with Western philosophy, literature, psychology, and modern culture, Rabbi Cardozo has become known for his willingness to challenge religious complacency while remaining deeply rooted in the Jewish tradition. His writings call for a Judaism marked by wonder, authenticity, spiritual depth, and intellectual honesty.
