Dennis Dauble (that's me) retired in 2009 after a 35+ year career as a fisheries scientist to spend more time writing about fish and fishing. My natural history guidebook, "Fishes of the Columbia Basin," the recent short story collection, "Bury Me With My Fly Rod," and the most recent book "A Rustic Cabin" were awarded First Place, Excellence in Craft from the Northwest Outdoor Writers Association. A recent review by Writers Digest of "Bury Me With My Fly Rod" stated, “The writing is so eloquent and beautiful. This is a book about fly fishing, but it could be a book of poetry at certain points." My latest story collection is titled "Casting into the Twilight" and yes, there is a metaphor in there. Subtitle is "Fishing, family, friends, and growing old gracefully."
Many of my stories and essays focus on the often unspoken connections between human behavior and angling. Others are merely a good read–a day on a river, lake, stream, or wandering the slopes of northeastern Oregon's Blue Mountains. I can only hope the narratives both entertain and inform.
Along with my books, I write for angling magazines and regional newspapers. Newspaper columns have given me the freedom to write on a wider variety of topics of my choice: eating squirrel, hunting mushrooms, gleaning firewood, fishing adventures, and more. I am a member of the Northwest Outdoor Writers Association, the Outdoor Writers of America, and the Pacific Northwest Writers Association. Many of my newspaper columns, blogs, and stories (including life at the family cabin and secret fishing holes) can be found on my website.
