Professor Newman's principal research interest is understanding the health behaviors of young people in culturally diverse settings. Dr. Newman has taught and conducted research at numerous sites and institutions around the world including George Williams College, University of Tennessee, University of Nebraska Medical Center, the National University of Singapore, Mahidol University, Salaya, Thailand, Inner Mongolia Ministry of Public Health, Department of Education, New Zealand, among others. He is a former staff member of the World Health Organization, South East Asia Regional Office, New Delhi, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

Presently Dr. Newman is The Wesley C. Meierhenry Distinguished Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and American Deputy Director, American Exchange Center, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an China, and is the Director of the Nebraska Prevention Center for Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

A native of New Zealand, Newman completed his education in the United States and holds degrees from George Williams College, Aurora University, and the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana. He completed post-doctoral work at Harvard School of Public Health. Throughout his career Newman has been the recipient of many honor and awards. In 2001 he was appointed life-long Honorary Professor of Yunnan Health Education Institute in Kunming, People’s Republic of China and was named UNL Faculty, International Scholar of the Year.
