Nigel J.L. Digby

My day job was as a music teacher, but after a serious illness in 2020, I can no longer play. I have always loved writing, and now do it virtually 24/7. My love is for railways, and the Midland & Great Northern in particular. This was due to my father, who knew the line in the 1930s and was a founder member of the M&GN Circle. My training in architecture enabled me to measure, draw and survey the M&GN, and in 1993 to use the M&GN Circle archive of track plans to publish my first book "A Guide to the Midland & Great Northern", which was the first, and until recently the only book to use original research to cover the architecture and engineering of the line. Subsequently, I have revisited the subject in a more comprehensive way, by publishing "The Stations & Structures of the M&GN" in two volumes. I have written a few titles for Ian Allan, but I am perhaps best known outside the environs of the M&GN for my series of articles for "British Railway Modelling" on the pre-Grouping railway liveries. These were published in four volumes from 2014 to 2020.
