R. Mukundan is an emeritus professor in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, in 1996. He has been actively involved in research and development in the fields of image processing, machine vision, and computer graphics since 1982. He has led several research projects in the Computer Graphics and Medical Image Analysis (CGMIA) research group in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Canterbury.
Mukundan's areas of research include pattern and texture analysis, biomedical image processing, machine learning, and real-time computer graphics algorithms. He has taught computer graphics courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels for around 27 years. He has authored 4 books and has published over 140 technical papers in journals and conference proceedings.
