Having grown up in a rural town in the American Northeast, I attended Middlebury College and went on to a career in international business. Now retired, my last assignment took me to Beijing, China, where I managed the Asia Pacific region for a US industrial company from 2007 until 2016, and again from 2019 until 2023. I have also been an operating partner in a private equity firm and served on the board of directors of four public companies in the US and Canada. And I was recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Global Leader for Tomorrow in the inaugural class of '93.
After almost 50 years in the corporate trenches, I have become increasingly disheartened by the state of American capitalism and the political and social division that now defines my American homeland. Our economy, our culture, and our politics have been overrun by a pervasive attitude of self-interest and greed. From the workplace to the public square, our collective interests are being trampled by a soul-crushing me-first ideology of bitterness and animosity.
My latest book is Unintended Consequences: The Science of Context, available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle versions. It is not a book of political ideology. It is a book of applied philosophy, the science of context, that builds on the butterfly effect launched by Sir Isaac Newton and Adam Smith, that helps explain how we got here and how we might proceed along a better path.
Other books I have written:
We, Ourselves, and Us: Creating a More Just and Prosperous America
Understanding China: There is Reason for the Difference
Understanding Business: The Logic of Balance
Understanding Life: Context is Everything
I also wrote two fictional books under the pen name of Avam Hale:
The Message: A Thinking Thriller About Change and Choice.
The Bomb Shelter: Some Stories are Too Incredible to be Fiction.
