Daniel Bacon is a writer and San Francisco Historian. In 1998 he founded the Barbary Coast Trail, San Francisco's official historical walking trail, connecting twenty of San Francisco’s most important historic sites. Daniel has written numerous articles about San Francisco history for local and national publications. He has been featured on television programs such as KQED’s Sin, Fire and Gold! The Days of San Francisco’s Barbary Coast. And he continues to give tours of the Barbary Coast Trail to individuals, corporations, and school children.
Daniel has deep roots in the Bay Area. As a youngster he crossed the bay in a side-wheel ferry not long before the service was discontinued. Along the Embarcadero he breathed the aroma of coffee and nutmeg wafting from brick factories now long gone, at Playland he stared amused at Laughin’ Sal and her continuous cackle, and at Candlestick Park he watched in awe as Willie Mays made his signature basket catches. He is a graduate of San Francisco State University and continues to live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
