About the Author

Shaun Edward Sundahl was born in 1981. Shaun is a first-generation Dutch Indonesian/American who grew up near Baldwin Park, California. In 2002, Shaun accomplished his childhood dream and was sworn in as a full-time police officer.

Shaun earned his Associate of Science degree in Law Enforcement from Mt. San Antonio College (Walnut, CA), his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from San Diego State University, and while writing one of his books, his Master of Public Administration degree from Kaplan University.

Between 2010 and 2017, Shaun was hired as a part-time instructor at Brightwood College (formerly Kaplan College) teaching the following courses: Criminology, Criminal Investigations, Capstone, Corrections, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Ethics, Interpersonal Communications, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Patrol Operations, Private Security, and Terrorism.

Shaun currently works at a smaller full-service police agency along the U.S. and Mexico International Border. Shaun’s experience, as it relates to private investigations, is unique in that all patrol officers at his department are responsible for follow-up and primary investigation duties. With a department with limited investigative and financial resources, creativity is a must.

During his 5 years' as a Watch Commander, Shaun has managed major crime scenes, fatal and severe traffic collisions, performed internal affairs investigations, handled citizen complaints, performed pre-employment background investigations, and managed the Criminal Analysis Unit consisting of San Diego State University interns.

Once licensed as an investigator in 2010, Shaun obtained extensive experience with mortgage fraud cases while performing work for United Guaranty and Kohler and Associates, LLC. Shaun’s experience includes work as a criminal investigator and, at one time, he was assigned as a contract investigator for the Riverside County Public Defender’s Office (due to change in leadership with his law enforcement career, Shaun had to limit his work in criminal investigations). Shaun also handled cases involving workers’ compensation fraud, surveillance operations, skip tracing, and private and public-sector pre-employment background investigations.

Since 2010, Shaun has helped over 500 applicants to pass the California Private Patrol Operator (PPO) and Private Investigator (PI) Exam offered by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services.

Shaun lives happily with his family in the Imperial County, and on his days away from the police force, he continues to write more and more articles and books about his experiences in law enforcement, legal investigations, and private security.
