Born January 15, 1953 at 8:26 a.m. at St. Mary's Hospital in Long Beach, California. Pulled from the womb by the legendary Sister Alphonsus. At age four Tom stunned the family by miraculously playing the piano. At Longfellow Elementary School his classmates pleaded with the teacher to let Tom read his short stories to the class because they found them so entertaining.
In his book Extreme Attraction he writes about unrequited love and the need to let go of it.
The story is like The Old Man and the Sea but rather than go after a fish Tom chooses to go after a woman. He makes a heroic effort to woo the woman of his dreams but in the end he does not have better luck than the man who went after the fish.
In The Dionysus Trail, an extensive autobiography, he writes about growing up sober in an alcoholic home. The story shows the importance of using clear thinking to get through the problems of life. In high school race riots erupt and Tom gets punched in the mouth by a black person. But the event does not turn him into a racist and he continues to have black friends. The Dionysus Trail makes the point that if you engage in clear thinking then nothing can turn you into a racist.
In Hill of the Muses Tom begins with an essay describing his guiding principles for achieving goals. The rest of the book presents poetry which shows an astute observer on a search for wisdom.
