Author Scott W. Allen has written three in-depth biographies of the Grateful Dead that encompass the Dead's history as no book or books have ever done. Mr. Allen's histories are the most accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date biographies on the Dead ever written.
His newest tome, Were They Ever Here at All? More Epic Tales of the Grateful Dead, is Scott's third and final installment in his written histories of the revered San Francisco group and updates the Dead's history through February 2022.
The Foreword for Were They Ever Here at All? More Epic Tales of the Grateful Dead was penned by the late Grateful Dead lyricist John Barlow, who remained a friend to the author for more than 25 years.
Were They Ever Here at All? covers previously uncharted territory in the band's history. Included are essays that explore Grateful Dead songs such as "William Tell," "Ramble on Rose," "Wharf Rat" and "Terrapin Station." The mysterious death of Neal Cassady in February 1968 is examined in never-before-told detail. The meteoric ascension and post-2015 development of Dead & Company is charted.
There are stories that chronicle the rise of the Mime Troupe, and the creation of new groups such as Wolf Bros, the Phil and Bob duo, and the Bill Kreutzmann and Billy Strings band. A bevy of legendary Grateful Dead shows are broken down and explored, among them: February 14, 1968; August 16, 1969 (Woodstock); September 2, 1978 (Englishtown); April 22, 1979 (Brent's debut); October 11, 1983; June 28, 1985; October 17, 1990, and June 18, 1992.
In his new tome, the author has penned touching eulogies to Robert Hunter, John Barlow, Gloria Jones (JGB), and Deadhead Adam Katz.
Were They Ever Here at All? also focuses on the last five years of Jerry's life.
In his first book, Aces Back to Back: The History of the Grateful Dead, Scott recounts the Grateful Dead's history from their earliest roots - the 1961 meeting of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter - and takes you right up to January 2017 and the rise of Dead & Company. All of the key moments and players in the Dead's history in-between are covered in AB2B.
His second book, Songs to Fill the Air: Tales of the Grateful Dead, is a collection of essays on the Grateful Dead - never-before-told tales that reach across far-ranging and fascinating topics and individuals.
Mr. Allen is a veteran of nearly 250 Grateful Dead concerts and taught and coached on the high school and college levels for 30 years.
Scott wrote for Relix magazine from 1984 until 1992, serving as a Senior Writer, columnist ("Fragments"), and feature article writer. He was commissioned by the Library of Congress to write the essay that accompanies the induction of the Grateful Dead's concert on May 8, 1977 at Barton Hall into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. His work with Relix is archived in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum.
The author was born in the Bronx, NY and currently resides in Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Buchanan, NY. He holds degrees in journalism (BS, University of Oregon) and special education (MAT, Manhattanville College).
