Shirley R. Steinberg

Shirley R. Steinberg is the Whitworth Award Winner for Career Education Research Excellence. She is a documentary filmmaker and her most recent film, "The Elders' Room" garnered 17 festival awards, including Best Female Director and Writer. Currently a professor at The University of Calgary she was the Werklund Chair of Critical Youth Studies for 10 years. A social theorist, she is the author and editor of many books on urban and youth culture, Islamophobia, cultural studies, critical pedagogy, LGBTQ issues, anti-racism education, critical media literacy, and social justice. She is an international speaker and TV columnist and is involved in community activism and empowerment.
