Ann Oliverio

Before escaping the mean city streets for the windy plains of Oklahoma, Annie was an administrative assistant and office manager at a subscription fulfillment company in Boulder, a think-tank in Santa Monica, a university in Cambridge, MA, at the Ministry of Interior in the Green Zone in Baghdad, and at a non-profit in D.C.

Now she spends her time walking the pastures with her two dogs (Ike & Willa), baking bread, painting, stirring pots, writing, reading, and sharing recipes at Unrefined Vegan. She lives in blissful satellite- and cable-free isolation with her husband, Kel.

Annie's first book of essays, Good Pasture: Short & Shorter Stories From Rural Oklahoma, is a thoughtful and deeply personal look at life in the midwest. She has also authored several vegan cookbooks: Crave Eat Heal: Plant-based, Whole Food Recipes to Satisfy Every Appetite; the companion e-book/book, Crave.Eat.Heal.Outtakes; It's Got to Taste Good: Easy Plant-Based Meat Recipes for the Home Cook (with Elaine Spencer & Libby Doughty); Unrefined Snacking: 10 Dairy-free, Oil-free, Gluten-free, Nut-free Vegan Treats; and TEAse Me: 15 Tempting Plant-based Recipes Inspired by the World's Favorite Beverage.

A Terminal Illness Primer For Caregivers: Lessons Learned From My Brother's End of Life Journey, which first appeared in installments on her blog, was self-published in 2013. Annie's illustrated book of her dog's adventures as a stray puppy, The Book of Ike: An Abandoned Dog's (Imagined) Epic Origin Story was self-published in Fall 2018. The follow-up illustrated book, The Life of Ike: A Dog’s Thoughts in A to Z Clerihews was published in the spring of 2024. In The 160: The Essential Elements of an Oklahoma Ranch, Annie documents the beauty of the local flora, fauna, water/ice/snow, wood, metal, soil & sky, shell & bone, and rock & stone. The companion book, Oklahoma Field & Flower: Grasses & Forbs, Photos & Words, follows a year on the life of her ranch, pulling posts and color photographs from her blog of the same name. Remains: Evidence of Life & Death on the Prairie is her most recent book of photographs.
