Barry Hull

CDR Barry W. Hull, USNR (Retired), founder and partner of the consulting firms Athena Assessment Inc. and Pilot Judgment Inc., thinks it’s a bit braggadocio to say he is one of the world’s foremost experts in decision-making and evaluative judgment. But he is, and many of his enthusiastic clients will gladly tell you so.

His life experiences and education as a retail business owner, consultant, combat decorated F/A-18 Hornet pilot and airline pilot, and his study and in-depth analysis of evaluation, give him an expertise and understanding of judgment and decision-making equaled by very few.

His consultancies have worked with more than 350 companies; improving judgment, developing leaders, and enhancing the hiring process. Analyzing and interpreting the judgment data from his company’s judgment assessment has enriched a wide range of clients from healthcare, retail, manufacturing, construction, legal, financial, automotive, education, law enforcement, military, technology, athletics, and more. His opinions and insights into judgment are valued at the highest corporate levels. As an expert in evaluative judgment as it relates to safety, he lectures on behalf of the Federal Aviation Administration.

Military combat operations, including flying into Baghdad on the first night of Desert Storm, brought him local and national media attention and a mention in more than one book about the subject. He has appeared numerous times on the major and cable television networks and has been a military analyst for Fox News, featured on 60 Minutes II, the History and Discovery channels, as well as a variety of newspapers, radio stations, and other media outlets.

His military awards include the Naval Meritorious Service Medal for exemplary performance while serving as Commanding Officer, Air Medals and Navy Commendations with Valor, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Distinguished Naval Graduate, and various unit commendations. He has landings aboard a variety of aircraft carriers, including the USS Saratoga. His final naval tour was as a Naval Reservist assigned to the Supreme Allied Command.

As a civilian pilot, he enjoys flying for business and pleasure. He has flown missionary groups, organ transplant patients, and military veterans. He is also a captain for American Airlines. He is a regular speaker for schools, groups, and events.

He is on the Board of the Sportsmen’s Foundation for Military Families, a non-profit foundation whose mission is to provide a healing environment for military families through participation in the outdoor sports.

Hull received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in civil engineering from Clemson University.
