Pat Nelson

Pat Nelson was born in Bemidji, Minnesota, where she lived with her family on the dairy farm of a tuberculosis sanatorium. She was a shy child, and she learned that writing was a safe way to express herself. Once she stopped being timid, she became a writer with a quick wit, one who enjoys finding humor in most anything.

She is a freelance editor, and enjoys making the work of other writers even better. She respects writers who care as much about good editing as a good story.

She combined her quick wit and love of humor as a co-creator and story contributor for Publishing Syndicate's humorous and sometimes edgy anthology series, "Not Your Mother's Book." The publishers of "Not Your Mother's Book" previously co-authored "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books for 10 years, but their NYMB series contained no sad stories, only humorous true stories that were just edgy enough to make them fun to read. And speaking of a quick wit . . . Nelson has attended Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshops in Dayton, Ohio, a gathering of 300 quick-witted writers.

Nelson co-created "Not Your Mother's Book . . . On Being a Parent," a book that is filled with stories of people who survived parenthood and lived to laugh about it. Her next ROFL book, "NYMB . . . On Working for a Living," was released in November, 2014. In addition, she proofread all 11 of the "Not Your Mother's Books and was a story contributor to each."

She previously wrote a column for "The Valley Bugler" and "The Daily News," Longview, Washington, and her stories appear at www.LewisRiver.com.

She has conducted these workshops: "Finding Your Story" and "How to Write for Anthologies and Build Your Platform." In addition, she has volunteered with elementary students to encourage them to enjoy writing.

She lives in Woodland, Washington, and has participated in Cedar Creek Writers, WordFest Northwest, Whidbey Island Writers, and Willamette Writers. She isn't the only writer in her family. Her daughter, Susan Rose, is a fiction writer who published the romance-adventure-fantasy "Shattered Crust: Yellowstone Bites Back."
