Dr. Steven Fleming is a leading theorist of architecture and urban design as these relate to bicycle transport, developing architectural and planning responses to the problem of large scale bicycle oriented urban redevelopment. His talks include keynotes at the institutes of architecture in New York, Rotterdam, Singapore and Sydney and for The European Cycling Federation and European Cyclelogistics Federation. His designs for incentivising active transport have been published internationally and exhibited by national and state museums. He coordinates a unique bicycle urbanism design studio at the University of Tasmania where he supervises bicycle urbanism research projects by MA and PhD candidates and coordinates graduate research. He consults to local and national governments and to developers internationally. Ongoing he is a visiting scientist at the Harvard School of Public Health and previously was a visiting scholar in the Department of Philosophy at Columbia University. He regularly writes press articles plus has over 40 scholarly publications including the first book on bicycle urbanism by the seminal Dutch publishing house NAi010. His 1000+ blog posts are internationally known for provoking intelligent debate on bike planning matters. As a government architect in Singapore he designed and project managed 4 major developments including a total of 1810 dwelling units and community facilities. He also designed a 2.4 hectare park, an early example of his life mission to design active environments.
