Claire E. Scheuren

Claire E. Scheuren is an American nonprofit executive, editor and author. She lives in Tucson, Arizona and Gabarus, Nova Scotia. Most recently, she is the author of a Canadian oral history of the last surviving government-employed Morse code operator in the Canadian Maritime provinces: Bringing Out The Untold Life, Recollections of Mildred Reid Grant Gray. The book includes Scheuren’s verbatim notes of over two hundred conversations with Mildred Gray, maps, historic and family photographs, and a history of the region.

As the founder and Chair of Exercise Democracy, she authored fourteen civic education publications including Ethical Emergencies, Doing the Right Thing, and the 1992 Campaign Game which was syndicated nationally in 103 newspapers through the National Student/Parent Mock Election. She also created a series of workshops for Adult Education on Ethics, Issues, and Political Action. Ms. Scheuren edited six editions of The Reporter’s Source Book (1992-96), published by Project Vote Smart, to which 20,000 national and international political journalists subscribed.

In addition to her writing, Scheuren conducts interactive workshops on her publications, in particular on her “1 plus 1 Theory of Change “ and its tenet that one person has to make a difference before we can all make a difference. Presentations feature her theory of change based on individual ethical action and spheres of influence.

Scheuren serves as Executive Director of the Pima Prevention Partnership, a U.S.-award-winning nonprofit human service agency where she directs prevention and early intervention programs, charter schools, and substance abuse treatment for over 11,000 vulnerable adolescents and their families each year.

Scheuren has received numerous public service honors for her human rights and citizen education contributions. She was recognized by the American Institute for Public Service with the Jefferson Award, the Rabbi Albert T. Bilgray Make a Difference Award from the Tucson Human Relations Commission and the City of Tucson, the Jorgensen Award from Compass Health Care, and the William Sears Vision in Service Award from the Baha’i Spiritual Assembly.
