Neela k. Sukhatme-Sheth is a retired pathologist who has spend many years looking through a microscope and giving out "scary and not-so-scary," diagnoses. In the surroundings of this veterans hospital where she worked, imagination took flight forming images and stories from her day-to day experiences. So war, human resilience and survival, are themes in, "The Crumpled Ballerina and Other stories." Several are set in various ethnic backgrounds.

Sukhatme-Sheth and her husband travel extensively. They have been to Africa several times, because he grew up in East Africa and practiced medicine there. "The White Sands of Nyali," is a fictional version of his medical experiences in the sixties, when Kenya gained independence from the British. Sukhatme-Sheth says she can see her own heart in the protagonist Abigail, a young physician from the midwest, who has traveled to Africa to find forgiveness.
