When I went back to school in my mid-thirties, I had a notion to study creative writing, but that required a foreign language. Armed with a journalism degree, I spent eight years as a newshound, but I found editing other people's copy excruciating. I just wanted to write, and left the newsroom to become a full-time freelancer, producing magazine and newspaper feature stories, and the newspaper column: “Out in the Ozarks.” I enjoyed a great deal of travel during that time, reflected heavily in my first book: Somebody’s Gotta Do It, and then again in my newest effort: Into Those Woods. Along the way, I spent three years producing the television show, “Bass Edge,” while hammering out my debut novel: The Orphan Train. I live with my beautiful and smart wife of 41 years, Kathy, in the Missouri Ozarks. With our best friend, Charley, we enjoy hiking the hilly trails and floating the clear streams near our home, forever seeking discovery.
