Author Charles Paterson was born Karl Schanzer in Vienna, Austria in 1929. As a nine-year-old Viennese boy of Jewish heritage, his life was irrevocably altered when Hitler annexed Austria into the Third Reich (the Anschluss) on March 12, 1938 . ESCAPE HOME documents his and his immediate family's escape from Vienna, Prague, and Paris to war years spent in Australia until arriving in Aspen, Colorado in 1949 to play a part in its development. Architecture is woven throughout from early European modernism and uncle Adolf Loos and to Paterson's apprenticeship at Taliesin under Frank Lloyd Wright.
