TO THE MOUNTAIN TOPS was written by Harold Mason Young (my grandfather) during his lifetime (1901-1975). The book was compiled and edited by Debbie Young Chase, and first published in August 2013.
Here is a quick biography on Harold Mason Young (submitted by editor):
Harold Mason Young was born in Kengtung, Burma on September 25, 1901. Born of missionary parents, his life would take him to many parts of northern Burma and into the southern bordering area of Yunnan, China (Banna). The author had the unique opportunity of growing up with the local Shan, many tribal groups, as well as the Lahu. In his book, the author gives a sincere and very detailed report on the Lahu during a time when the tribes were still practicing their traditional ways. Fluent in many languages, the author lived closely with the native people and was culturally more integrated with them than his own American ancestry. From the Lahu people, the author accumulated knowledge about the mountain rainforest, hunting and surviving in the dense jungle. His time in Burma would span the British era, Burmese independence in 1948, and later in 1952, conclude in over 20 years living in Chiang Mai, Thailand. In Thailand he is remembered best for founding and building the Chiang Mai Zoo, which has now evolved into one of the most beautiful and successful zoos in Southeast Asia. The author passed away on February 13, 1975 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
