I love the thrill of visiting foreign countries (sixty so far) to experience their geography and cultures, and write them into my stories. My first book, the noir "Blood Rain in Trieste" (2015), was written after a stimulating trip through Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Bosnia, and Serbia. "Recycled Love" (2017) marked a departure and a change in style for a suspense-romance with a spiritual twist. It was based upon my experiences during a trip I made across the fabulous mayhem of India to the calm of the sherpas in Nepal, including a trek up to Everest Base Camp.
I began serious writing in 2012 after visiting Trieste. I wanted to write something entertaining along the noir style of Chandler and Hammett, but in the more modern style of Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther novels. The result was "Blood Rain in Trieste," the story of Milo Marchetti, a former assassin, in a doomed romance with Adara Nasim, a mob boss's daughter, set in the underworld of the city. "Trapped in Trieste" continued the story of the rollercoaster relationship between Milo and Adara while Milo rose to power in the criminal world. A third in the series was released in 2025: "Black Swan in Trieste", in which Milo's life was under threat and his love for Adara more conflicted than ever. A fourth in the series is underway.
I grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and after obtaining a PhD in neurophysiology at the University of Sheffield, I worked in research at the University of California. I became a professor at the University of Toronto, Canada, before I taught for thirty years at a college in British Columbia. Retired, I reside with Janet and two tabby cats on Vancouver Island. l
