Gifted and cursed with an overactive imagination, Spencer Lackey has been making stuff up and putting it on paper since he was nine years old when he wrote and illustrated his first story, "George Smith". A tale of a man shipwrecked on an island, "George Smith" was a nine year-old's colorful imitation of Robinson Crusoe, except ol' George had a Jack Russell Terrier for a companion, which made him infinitely cooler.
After "George Smith", Spencer caught the writing bug and couldn't stop. In his late teens, he started taking it a bit more seriously, studying the craft of fiction writing intensively. Being homeschooled afforded him the opportunity to do so, and thankfully his dear mum was not only open-minded about his dream to become a writer, but encouraged him to pursue that dream with everything he had. Reading and creative writing became his passion. When he was seventeen, briefly obsessed with Ian Fleming's 007 novels (as well as the movies), Spencer wrote his own spy novel, Double Helix. Though its crude publication was limited to about fifteen copies for family and friends, Double Helix could be considered his first novel.
After that Spencer went on to write--and almost finish--a number of other manuscripts, most of which have yet to see the light of day, until, in 2013, at the age of 26, after far too much procrastination, he tried his hand at self-publishing and released his debut novel, The Deadly Unicorn: A Weird City Mystery.
For Spencer Lackey the road to success has been a slow and grueling one, as it usually is, but he believes that art, true art, like precious gems, must endure hardship and intense pressure before it can be mined and made into treasure.
