J. G. Matheny's writing draws primarily from her distinguished career as an FBI Special Agent. She served as a "badass" agent on the FBI–NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force and is a nationally recognized expert in financial crimes. This real-life experience with bombs, task forces, and murder infuses her novels with a sense of realism, intrigue, and humor. Before her FBI work, she earned a Master of Arts Degree in Journalism from New York University. This training, combined with her crime-fighting experience, allows her to approach mystery writing with a unique professional style.

She also served as past Chairman of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, Rocky Mountain Chapter.

She divides her time between Jacksonville, FL, and Denver, CO.
