Alexa Mieses

Alexa Mieses Malchuk, MD, MPH strives to have influence beyond the confines of the examination room. In addition to providing clinical care to patients in in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, she is an educator and medical content expert who is frequently quoted in the media. Her interests include mentoring and increasing diversity in the physician workforce; writing; and advocacy. She believes in a multi-pronged approach to achieving health equity.

Dr. Mieses is also an avid writer. First published in 2013 and now in its second edition, The Heartbeat of Success has been a successful tool for premedical students to gain admission to medical school. She has also published articles in peer-reviewed journals, formerly authored a health column for La Conexión (a Spanish-language newspaper), and she writes regularly for Medscape about current events in medicine and medical education/training. She is frequently quoted and featured in the media as a medical content expert with a special interest in minority health.

Dr. Mieses Malchuk is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill. She completed her residency at Duke University Medical Center. She earned her Medical Doctorate and Master of Public Health degrees at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the City University of New York-City College of New York.
