Matthew Baker was born in Hickory N.C. He lived in Hickory for twenty-two
years before leaving to attend Western Carolina University in 1995. While living
in Cullowhee N.C. and attending college, he became interested in the history of
the local mountains and began visiting with senior citizens in the local area to
obtain a first-hand perspective on the history of the area. His travels took him
to the small town of Whittier N.C. and culminated in his first book, My Mountain
Granny. With his latest publication, My Mountain Heroes, Matthew chronicles
the lives of many of his friends and neighbors in Franklin N.C., from the days of
The Great Depression and WWII, until today.
Matthew and his wife Deloris have four children; Emma, Maggie, Caleb and
Anna. He is a rural mail carrier in Franklin N.C.
