Chris Tobe and his wife Lisa Scott Tobe a Neurosurgery Nurse Practitioner at the University of Louisville Trauma Center together have 6 children and reside in Anchorage, Kentucky. Chris was born in Kentucky and has been involved in civic and political issues for over 20 years.
Tobe currently runs his own investment consulting firm Stable Value Consultants. and writes an investment column for the Wall Street Journal’s Marketwatch. He holds both the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designations. He graduated with a MBA in Finance and Accounting from the Kelly School of Business at Indiana University Bloomington and a BA in Economics from Tulane.
Before starting his investment career he served on the campaign staff of Congressman Lee Hamilton and as his intern to the Joint Economic Committee of Congress in Washington D.C. In 1997 he joined State Auditor Ed Hatchett’s Senior staff as his investment specialist and published a 40 page report on the investments of both the Kentucky Retirement Systems and the Kentucky Teachers Retirements Systems. He wrote a number of papers from this experience including one in the Kentucky Gazette entitled “Why Kentucky Needs a Strong Treasurer” In 2008 he was named by Governor Beshear to serve as a Trustee for the $13 billion Kentucky State Retirement system and finished out his term in 2012.
Recently he has consulted to major public plans in Texas and Maryland with his firm Stable Value Consultants. From 2008-2009 he was a Sr. Consultant with NEPC and worked with a number of public pension plans including Oklahoma Investment Commission, Oklahoma Tobacco Fund, St.Louis Sewer District, St. Louis Public Schools, Amtrak & City of Dearborn. While at AEGON 2001-2008 he worked with Public Plans such as Montana, Pennsylvania, LA County, Cook County, Chicago, Ohio, Vermont, & Memphis. While at Fund Evaluation group 1999-2001 he worked with Public University Endowments at Purdue, U. of South Carolina, Indiana State and U. of Memphis. He has published articles on public pension investing in the Financial Analysts Journal, Journal of Investment Consulting, Journal of Performance Measurement, and Plan Sponsor Magazine. He has given over a dozen presentations on Public Pension investing to a number of national groups and conferences including one recently at the Ohio State Law School. He has the taught the MBA investment course at the University of Louisville, and is the former President of the CFA society of Louisville. As a public pension trustee in 2010 he completed the Program for Advanced Trustee Studies at Harvard Law School and in 2011 he completed Fiduciary College held at the Rock Center at Stanford University.
Chris and his wife Lisa are both involved in FEAT (Families for Effective Autism Treatment) and Special Olympics. Chris is a long time Board member of COPES a drug prevention education non-profit, and serves on the Investment Committee of the Delta Tau Delta Educational Foundation. He has served as the President of Louisville Third Century, was named as a 40 under 40 top business leader by Louisville Business First and graduated from the Bingham Fellows program for community leadership.
