T.D. (Terry) Freiberg's debut novel, a thriller entitled THE GENESIS RESOLUTION, was published on August 10, 2013.

A fan of history and science, Terry and his wife were celebrating their retirement in the fall of 2009 with a trip to Rome, Italy. Having just spent the morning and afternoon touring the Vatican, they were wandering through a quaint little piazza called Campo dei Fiori when they happened upon a bronze statue in the middle of the courtyard.

That statute was of Giordano Bruno, a Dominican friar, mathematician, philosopher, and astronomer. Bruno was arrested in 1592 for publicly stating that the Earth revolved around the sun . . . a conflict with the Roman Church's teaching that the Earth was the center of the Universe.

Pope Clement VIII declared Bruno a heretic. He was imprisoned for seven years during a lengthy trial, and on February 17, 1600, he was found guilty of blasphemy, immoral teachings, and heresy. A stake was driven through his tongue and he was burned alive in the middle of the piazza.

In Geneva, Switzerland, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN was coming on line for the very first time. Dubbed the Big Bang Machine, CERN's collider will be used to closely duplicate conditions of the Big Bang in hopes of increasing our understanding of the beginning of the Universe.

Terry wondered, looking at the stature of Giordano Bruno, what would happen today if CERN were to discover the cause of the Big Bang . . . the cause of creation. Obviously, we are now a highly evolved species living in a world of unprecedented scientific enlightenment. Nothing like the fate that befell Giordano Bruno could possible happen today . . . could it?
