Thomas Tanner

Tom Tanner is a climate change, disasters and development researcher and policy specialist. After completing a PhD while working on a multi-country biodiversity and development programme in South America, he worked for the UK government on climate negotiations and policy, and as a technical specialist for the United Nations Development Programme in Bangladesh.

He started a policy-oriented academic life with IDS at the University of Sussex, and subsequently at the thinktank ODI. He is currently Director of the Centre for Development, Environment and Policy in the Department of Development Studies at SOAS University of London. An Associate Editor of the journal Climate and Development, he holds fellowships with the Royal Geographical Society and the Higher Education Academy.

Alongside his many academic articles (https://tinyurl.com/TannerScholar), he co-authored the leading textbook on 'Climate Change and Development' (2014, Routledge) and 'The Triple Dividend of Resilience', a book building a new business case for investment in disaster risk management (2017, Springer). His latest book 'Resilience Reset' on cities and climate change is published by Routledge in 2021.
