Abby Stein, Ph.D.
Abby Stein is a Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. Dr. Stein has written numerous articles on interdisciplinary research, criminal psychopathology, child maltreatment, and states of consciousness during violent perpetration and victimization. Stein's first book, Prologue to Violence: Child Abuse, Dissociation, and Crime, was published in the U.S. by The Analytic Press in 2007; a Japanese edition from Shogen-sha came out in 2012. Her recent research, on the emotional subtext of women's involvement with abusive men, has culminated in a new book, Cupid's Knife: Women's Anger and Agency in Violent Relationships, published by Routledge in 2013.
Dr. Stein returned to school after a 15 year absence to receive her GED, graduate summa cum laude from the CUNY Baccalaureate Program, complete her Ph.D. at the CUNY Graduate Center, and finish her postdoctoral training at the prestigious William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis, and Psychology in New York. Stein feels a strong kinship with older college students, particularly returning women, and has dedicated herself to helping them change their lives through scholarship. At commencement in 2004, she was recognized for her outstanding teaching and commitment to students.
Dr. Stein currently serves as the Director of the John Jay-Vera Fellows Program, a collaboration between John Jay College and the Vera Institute of Justice. She is the CEO of Stein Psychodynamic Associates LLC, which provides education, training, and private consultation on a variety of psychodynamic issues.
