Anwarul Islam

Dr. Islam was trained at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith Hospital in London, England, under the hematology Professors D. A. G. Galton, John M. Goldman and Daniel Catovsky. While at Hammersmith Hospital, he conducted research on bone marrow structure in human leukemia, which earned him a PhD degree from London University. He obtained his membership and fellowship in hematology from the Royal College of Pathologists in the United Kingdom. He also has the Specialty Registration in Hematology as established by the General Medical Council (GMC) UK, under the European Specialist Medical Qualification Order of 1995. Because of his recognized work in leukemia, Dr. Islam was invited to Roswell Park Cancer Institute where he continued his work with late Dr. Harvey Preisler and Dr. Edward Henderson, the Chief of Medical Oncology.

Dr. Islam revolutionized the bone marrow procedure by inventing and patenting the first bone marrow biopsy needle with a core retention device. He also developed and patented a multiport bone marrow aspiration needle to overcome the sampling errors inherent in the technique of bone marrow aspiration, a harvesting needle for bone marrow transplantation, and a sternal puncture needle to overcome the disadvantages associated with conventional sternal puncture needle. It has been designed for safety; ease of use and for operator comfort. In addition, Dr. Islam has designed and patented a new single use bone marrow biopsy needle which is easy to use and provide better results.

He has over 120 publications in peer reviewed medical journals including, Lancet, Blood and the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Islam is a member of many professional societies in his field, including the American Society of Hematology. He is also a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. Currently, Dr. Islam is a clinical associate professor of medicine at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
