Alexandre Afonso

Alexandre Afonso is an associate professor at Leiden University, Netherlands. Born in French-speaking Switzerland to Portuguese parents, he has taught and researched in the United Kingdom (King's College London), Italy (European University Institute), Germany (Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies) and the United States (Johns Hopkins University). He is fluent in French, English, Portuguese, German, Italian, and Dutch.

His area of research is political economy, with a focus on labour markets, the welfare state and immigration. His work has been published in many prestigious outlets in the field of political science and public policy, such as Socio-Economic Review, Comparative Political Studies, Journal of European Public Policy, European Journal of Political Research and Governance, among others.
