McConnell is in his seventies, retired from decades in technology. His parents were left-leaning intellectuals, living in a rural part of Michigan. His father was in the Art Department at Michigan State University. The resulting exposure to the arts, social consciousness, horses, pickup trucks, farming, academia, dogs, and motorcycles gave McConnell what he admits is a mixed bag of world views and tastes.
Today, he writes a series of moral tales, thinly disguised as crime novels. In the intervals of writing long fiction, he also produces short stories, poems, song lyrics, and – so far one – short play. Many of them are included in The Run of Myself and With His Ship Intact.
When he's not writing, he cooks; takes pictures of plants and animals; supports wildlife preservation and a kind of vindictive/progressive politics, and he reads history and biography. He lives in Ann Arbor with his wife and dog.
