Grace D. Cumming

Grace Darling Cumming earned her professional nurse diploma from University of Virginia School of Nursing in 1956 and was a Registered Nurse for 30 years. She worked mostly in hospitals and public health services, full- and part-time. She married and had three children. She has five grandchildren, four of whom are grown, three, married.

In 1981, Grace completed her baccalaureate degree in Philosophy and Religion at Mary Baldwin College. She then earned a PhD in Religion and Society from Drew University, in 1987, and taught full- and part-time for twenty years at the collegiate and graduate levels in numerous schools. She now enjoys an active retirement.

Grace has published several articles related to social ethics. Her earlier book, Passion and Reason: Womenviews of Christian Life (Louisville, KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 1993), provided moral analysis and response for some of the ethical issues she encountered in public health nursing.

Volunteer work in Red Cross, PTA, Girl Scouts, other community organizations, and the church has been important to Grace. Over the years she has found time to enjoy her artistic abilities; in recent years, that has taken her into colored pencil work. Other retirement interests are family, good friends, apartment gardening, and travel.
