James D. Smith

James D. Smith is a leadership speaker, trainer, and coach with a passion for helping people lead well—wherever they serve. Based in Cynthiana, Kentucky, he is the Executive Director of the Cynthiana–Harrison County Chamber of Commerce, working with entrepreneurs, employers, and community partners to strengthen local business and build opportunity. James previously served as Mayor of Cynthiana for a decade, leading with a focus on economic growth, community revitalization, and steady, people-first leadership through pivotal moments, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

A U.S. Army veteran and Maxwell Leadership–certified communicator, James has spent more than twenty years designing and delivering training that turns leadership concepts into practical action. His work often draws from real-life experience across public service, small business, and community development—bridging strategy with relationships and accountability.

James is also the owner of the Rohs Opera House & Theater Co., a historic, art deco–era venue that hosts classic films, live theatre, concerts, and community events. Whether he’s teaching a workshop, writing a book, or welcoming audiences downtown, James believes strong leadership starts with service, grows through intentional habits, and is proven in the everyday choices that build trust.
