From childhood Cheryl was drawn to children who struggled. After earning a master's degree in special education and working with children in numerous settings, she learned of Marva Collins teaching Shakespeare, Latin & Greek roots, debate and composition to children in the inner-city of Chicago, some of whom had been labeled "mentally retarded." Cheryl remembers thinking, "If Marva Collins can do this with these children, why are we not teaching in more elevated ways with ALL of our children?"

She and her husband adopted and homeschooled twins who have autism, learning disabilities, and schizophrenia. The children inspired the book "Simply Classical: A Beautiful Education for Any Child" (Memoria Press, 2nd ed, 2019) and the teaching resources, including a full infancy-high school program for schools and homeschools, the Simply Classical Curriculum. Cheryl holds lifetime K-12 teaching certifications in learning disabilities and behavior disorders.

A seventh generation Missourian, Cheryl lives today with her husband of more than thirty years and their children in a quiet lake community in southeast Missouri.
